The frigid North.

The frigid North.

Where men (And some women, I suppose, although I don't know any.) haul ice houses complete with windows and a door out onto frozen lakes and leave them there all winter, taking up weekend residence while they fish the places where, in the summer, they'd need Bermuda shorts and a snorkel.

The frigid North.

Where trekking to Target with MSC in the winter burns 2,400 calories, what with all the snowsuit bundling and unbundling.

The frigid North.

Where it snows and snows. And then snows some more. Where, out of necessity, even the four year olds grow tough enough to play out of doors for literally hours on end.

ChristmasSnow2

The frigid North.

Where big boots on feet and snow chains on tires are a recommendation, if not a requirement.

ChristmasOutside4

The frigid North.

Where you travel hours south for Christmas and, you were so far north to begin with, that you're still in the frigid North when you arrive at your parents' house.

ChristmasSnow4

The frigid North.

Where you live so close to Canada that Canadian change is accepted at your local grocery store. (You know the one, the one where you can trade plastic placards with numbers on them for bags of groceries--that may or may not be yours--so you don't even need to get out of your car in the snow.)

ChristmasOutside6

The frigid North.

Where you're not even afraid to get out of your car anyway. Where winter makes her own sandbox year after year. Yards, decks and cul-du-sacs full of snow become virtual playgrounds as cold becomes our way of life for at least 5 months out of the year.

ChristmasSnow3

The frigid North.

Where, during winter, playgrounds are forsaken as slides are traded in for sleds.

ChristmasOutside5

Yes, the frigid North.

ChristmasSnow1

We're at home here.

Awwww, he is so darn cute. My little one keeps saying, if it is winter, why don't we have snow? Poor thing, I will show her these pictures tomorrow, so she can live through little Big Mac for a couple of minutes.

Oh, how I'd love to see some snow. The Army has kept us in the warm climates for the last 5 years and I miss the cold weather so much!

Yep, makes me feel guilty that I complained today - new record high of 83! I'd enjoy that snow for about 24 hours - then please ship my frozen carcass home!

Hey - remember AGES ago when you were looking for a 'come back' when some idiot asked if all those MSC were yours?! Heard a good one the other day . . . A dad with 6 MSC says that his answer is, "No, I work for a condom manufacturer and these are some of the customer complaints." Thought you might add it to your list!

So glad that the Gang's all having such fun! Have a safe trip back north!

Missing the frigid north right now, although we are technically north of north, but it doesn't count because my fam's not here.

Nice chained ATV shot. Kids are cute too, as always.

Great pictures!!

I'm in the frigid Northwest, which is not supposed to be so frigid!! But the rain has come and soon our winter wonderland will be gone... which is just fine with me, as I (and everyone else around me) haven't been able to drive my Honda Accord for a week! I'm sure in the frigid north, no one tries to drive in 2wd in the ice and snow!!

Yep, pretty much. I grew up in the suburbs of Rochester Ny and it was about the same up there. *brrrr*

Did you know that the plural for "Cul de sac" is actually "culs de sac" and not "cul de sacs"??

I'm not trying to correct you but I have always wanted a chance to share that little bit of useless information. I have no idea why I know that but I thought I would pass it on to someone else to store in their useless information library :)

I am from the frigid Pacific Northwest (east of Seattle), where we have had snow pretty much everyday for the last week. They hardly ever cancel school, but everything was shut down last Thursday and Friday! Great pictures by the way.

We're visiting TX for the holidays and I had to buy a few short sleeved shirts today. Apparently I was silly enough to pack mostly sweaters! (We're loving every minute of being in this weather, too.)

Total admiration from NC...didn't even wear a coat yesterday. I can't imagine bundling up in snow suits - me or the kiddos!

That last picture of big mac just melts my heart. Love his smile! We've had a lot of snow too! And also very cold temperatures...last week with the wind chill it got to -26!!! Which leads me to my question...where is your favorite place to purchase baby legs? I've been searching the internet for the best places. I would love to layer them under my kids' pants when we do venture out this winter. Thanks!

So are you jealous that its supposed to be close to 80 degrees here in sunny (well its actually quite cloudy) South Carolina? We are in Hilton Head visiting my parents so we will be going to the beach in short sleeved shirts and maybe even shorts! My husband might just jump into the ocean just to say that he did during Christmas... but even with all of our warm weathers, we are actually quite jealous of you. See we can't wear cute sweaters and it honestly does not feel like winter, let alone Christmastime. It's crazy that we had 30 degree days in Oct and 80 degree days in Dec... go figure! Enjoy the snow... and when yall feel cold just think of visiting us down south!

The pics of Big Mac are absolutely precious. Hey, just just answered my question as to why I haven't been able to keep my weight down in the past few years... our kids are finally getting their snow gear on by themselves, ha ha!!

The coldest it gets here in N. California is about 50, if we're lucky. Needless to say, my children have never laid eyes on snow. **sniff**

I was hoping for a white Christmas here in Ohio, but you gotta love Ohio weather...it was in the 40's yesterday and today it is suppose to be 65 and then back down to 40's tomorrow. Gotta love it. I would mind some of that snow, but for that many months - UGH!!

Thanks for sharing the great pics!!

For the past several winters I've been saying "I'm too old for the cold" but then a beautiful snowfall comes and we bundle up in ginormous coats and throw the truck into 4 wheel drive and it's just plain....home. The kid-bundling was always interesting. The cold wind and deep snow make spring that much more beautiful and welcome. Big Mac is precious. Takes me waaaayyy back to the days where the kids' arms wouldn't quite go all the way down to their sides! And they never got cold - that's what always amazed me!

HK said...

Lovely pics, you've got some cute kids! I was looking at them and thinking it looks so warm there! The last few days here (I'm living in Iqaluit on Baffin Island... Nunavut, Canada) it's been so cold we don't dare walk around with faces showing and no ski pants for hours. There are very few parts of Canada colder than us. Enjoy the snow!

The ice fishing...not so much. It's just an unnatural concept. What exactly does one DO in an ice hut? Sit and fish? Watch TV?

Nicole said...

I'm so jealous! I live in Alabama where we NEVER see snow and at the smallest threat of snow there is no milk or bread to be found on the grocery store shelves. Schools close even if there's a "chance" of snow.....seriously, my kid's school was closed a few weeks ago because 2-4 inches of snow was predicted....there was not one single flake!

Mrs de Miranda said...

The snow looks beautiful!! Though Im not sure if I would like it now, when I was younger I would have LOVED to be there!! I havent seen snow in about 2 years, and I would really like to go snow tubing!!

I gotta see a picture of this ice house....so cool and these ice fishing techniques!! Though I don't believe I envy the frigid temperatures for several months out of the year. Big Mac is adorable in the cold!!

I would love to see a picture of PC in his ice house! It NEVER snows here in TN! Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you :-)

I am so intrigued by this! You see, where we live, in great AR, when there is even a chance of snow, everything literally shuts down! Except Wal-Mart, where everybody is at stocking up on the necessities, even though, much like last week, it sleeted on Tuesday, and was 70 degrees by Saturday, so it is not like we are going to be snowed in forever or something. I wish that, just once, it would come a gigantic snow here, so we could sled and ride the ATV. Oh, well, I will just live vicariously through ya'll! :)

Precious pics!

Great post and pictures. We're in Alabama so it's supposed to be 72 here today. My kids want to play in the snow so bad! We had a 'dusting' last year and they loved it. But we're gonna have to go visit someone to play in more than that I guess. I would ask if you want some company, but I remember reading a post where you have one baby in the closet so I'm thinking you wouldn't have room! lol Hope you guys are having wonderful holidays. Looks like Big Mac is definitely enjoying his! :-)

Wow. I mean WOW! Your pictures never cease to amaze me. I mean, you do have some of the most precious subjects to photograph, so that never hurts, but wow. You so inspire me...

I can't wait to get outside with my new camera...we've had such cruddy weather here lately...yesterday you could barely see your hand in front of your face because the fog was so thick! We had ice storms last week, and now my hubby told me it's supposed to hit 67 today...in INDIANA! Come on, Mother Nature. It's winter!

Have a lovely day with your MckFam!

Also wanted to say your pictures are amazingly crystal clear. I wish I could take pics like that. What kind of camera do you use? And did you take any photography classes?

Thanks

I love to see the seasons come and go, and I'm always ready for the cold to go sooner than the warmth, but what I would've given for a White Christmas...blah, brown grass just doesn't do it for me, especially on Christmas!

Looks like they're all having fun and feeling better!

I want some snow here, too! Not a lot...not like The Frigid North...5 or 6 inches of snow would be nice, though. We've only had a dusting of the stuff, and it only stuck in the mountains (see my blog entry, "Winter in the Mountains"). Maybe you could send some of your snowy weather to SW Virginia! lol

Looks like you all are having a blast. :o)

Brrr...all that snow makes me cold! We're in Colorado for a ski trip, and sadly, it didn't even occur to me that my 11 month old just might have issues adapting to the altitude...we all do...not sure why I didn't think of that! Might be our last ski trip for a while...poor Zaden :) But the snow is so pretty!

Just a heads up that there will be less white stuff when you return home. We didn't have to rent skis this weekend - that's how much of it melted from the rain and 40 degree temps we had yesterday. Made for "fun" traveling to see my mom, Paul, Kara, and Lily in Northfield.

Glad to see everyone is having so much fun. My kids are loving seeing their grandparents every day this week. One more gathering tomorrow and then I'm going to collapse into a sugar coma until my birthday! :)

Miss you friend!
